Shortly following post-season play where the Michigan Wolverines finished 3-2 , I starting thinking about the future of the hoops squad. Next season should feature all the same players from this year, minus seniors Caris Levert and Spike Albrecht of course. One sure thing is John Beilein is in no danger of leaving the program. Once again he will bring in a full recruiting class of guys who are looking to make a difference. The 2016-2017 team will include four incoming freshmen, three of which are from enemy territory in Ohio. Over the next weeks I’ll be profiling each of the new guys. First up: Xavier Simpson
Xavier Simpson | 5-11 Point Guard |☆☆☆☆
Simpson is a four star player out of Lima, OH who was recently named Mr. Basketball for the state of Ohio. This award goes to the top player in the state and this year a Michigan commit grabbed the achievement. Simpson led Lima Senior (30-1) to the state championship game, but his squad fell short losing only its first game of the season.
Simpson had a tremendous season averaging 27.2 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.8 steals per game. He produced two giant scoring outings with 59 and 65, respectively. Some question Simpson’s height at the next level (5-11), but I believe this guy can do it all. He is a great scorer, a terrific distributor and knows how to manage a game. Simpson also boasts a very high basketball IQ, which is a staple for a John Beilein point guard. An area of improvement: his range.
John Beilein has proved year-after-year that he knows how to use a point guard at Michigan — a selling point for Simpson. Simpson has mentioned another Ohio Mr. Basketball award winner, Trey Burke, as an example of how great of an opportunity playing point guard at Michigan is. I look for Simpson to add some early competition at the point guard spot, grabbing a few minutes as a support role behind a well established Derrick Walton. Simpson’s career impact is TBD, but I believe he will be a name to remember.
