The Michigan Wolverines take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish tonight at 7:30 p.m. EST on NBC. A few story lines we were following throughout the week were Kyle Bosch‘s personal leave of absence and the status of Jabrill Peppers after suffering an ankle injury last week against Appalachian State. While Brady Hoke refuses to even peep about personnel leading up to tonight’s game, rumors have begun swirling of the possible return of tight end Jake Butt, who suffered an ACL tear earlier this year.
Butt’s return to the Michigan lineup would be huge for Devin Gardner, who hasn’t fared well on the road as a quarterback for the Wolverines. He’ll have Devin Funchess to look to out wide, but if Notre Dame’s secondary can find a way to contain him, there isn’t a proven name left. Butt would provide stability in the passing game by giving Gardner a second reliable option.
We likely won’t know if these rumors are try until kickoff tonight—the best we can do on any game day is speculate—but the return of Butt would mean big things for a Michigan team that needs to find an edge on the road tonight.
