Scouting Report: Cornell is a five-star prospect and the third-ranked weak side defensive end in the country, according the the 247 Composite Rankings.
Cornell’s biggest strength is his explosion off of the snap.At 270 pounds, he is an absolute force coming off of the edge and is frequently spending time in opposing backfields. Where many defensive ends exhaust much of their energy getting penetration through the line of scrimmage, Cornell has enough burst left after attacking at the line to close out on defenders and finish tackles. He is similar to 2014 Michigan State commit Malik McDowell in terms of being able to play every position of the defensive line.
Where Cornell needs to improve is with his moves at the line of scrimmage. He gets by most of the time on his pure power and athleticism. He will not be able to just blow by offensive lineman at the college level, so he will have to add some punch and swim moves to his repertoire.
